What are Some Ayurvedic Remedies for Constipation?

Constipation is a common issue which most of the people feel shy to talk about it in public. According to recent survey, 22 out of 100 Indians suffer from this problem in today’s time.

It is a condition when your stools become hard or you have irregular bowel movements. Having less than three bowel movements per week is not something normal. Triphala is a mixture of three herbs; Amla, Bibhitaki and Haritaki. It is one of the old and effective remedies for constipation. You can mix a tsp. of it with ½ tsp. coriander seeds and ¼ tsp. cardamom seeds and grind them to make a fine powder.

Milk and Ghee :

You can take one or two teaspoons of ghee in a cup of hot milk before going to bed.

Pulp of Bael Fruit :

Liquorice Root :

Liquorice or Mulethi is popular for promoting smooth bowel activity.

All you have to do is; take a cup of warm water and add a tsp. each of Mulethi powder and jaggery to it. Having this drink can help to ease the bowel movements.

Roasted Fennel Seeds :

The volatile oils present in fennel seeds are effective in kick-starting the digestion. It can promote the production of gastric enzymes.

Before going to bed, take a teaspoon of roasted fennel seeds with a glass of warm water as it acts as a gentle laxative. Chewing few fennel seeds after a heavy meal is also one of the home remedies for acidity.

Fig (Anjeer) :

Due to high fiber content, figs are often suggested for constipation problem. You can take figs in routine to keep your digestion going.

Soak the figs in warm water and take them. This can also be given to kids going through this problem.

China Grass :

Another name of it is agar-agar, it is dried seaweed. When cut into pieces and cooked in milk, becomes a gelatinous substance. Having this is helpful for getting relief from constipation and can ease up the process of waste removal.

Few Additional Tips to keep in mind for Preventing Constipation: –

  • Replace your caffeinated beverages with herbal teas like green tea, chamomile tea which help stimulate the process of digestion.
  • Have a fiber-rich diet in routine and drink plenty of water.
  • Do regular exercise which helps kick-start your digestion for at least 30 minutes.
  • Eat lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables to add bulk to the stool and maintain regular bowel movements.
