How to Get Relief from Constipation with the Help of Some Herbs?

Constipation is one of the most common digestive complaints in India and it affects around 22% of the total population. Some people experience short-term constipation, caused due to temporary changes in diet, stress or travel while others have chronic constipation which persists for several long weeks.

It happens due to difficulty in passing stools mainly because the colon has absorbed more water from the food, making the stools dry & hard. Some of the chief causes of constipation are a poor diet with low fiber, lack of physical activity, insufficient water intake, stress, and certain medications.

What are the Common Symptoms of Constipation?

A person can suffer from constipation if his/her body is showing any of the following symptoms:-

  • Hard and dry stools
  • Less than three bowel movements a week
  • Straining to have a bowel movement
  • Stomach Pain
  • Nausea and Bloating
  • Feeling like you can’t empty your bowels

If you find yourself relatable to any of the symptoms, yes you’re constipated. Before running to any drugstore for allopathic medicines, try some herbs to relieve your discomfort.

Today I’m going to share with you a list of some effective herbs which can give you Relief from constipation problem.

Let’s begin!

Fennel Seeds (Saunf) :

Fennel seeds are effective for constipation and problems related to it like gas and indigestion. The volatile oils of these seeds can help to kick-start the digestion by promoting the production of stomach enzymes.

What do you have to do?

Take a cupful of fennel seeds and roast and grind rind them and sieve the powder. You can store it in a jar and take half a tsp. with a glass of warm water.

Senna :

It is an herbal laxative and helpful in giving relief from constipation. It stimulates the muscles of the large intestine to push the waste matter out of the body in a quick manner. Moreover, it softens the stool by enabling the colon to absorb more water.

How to Senna Leaves for Constipation?

Take 1-2 tsp. dry senna leaves and boil them in a cup of water. Steep it for 10 minutes, strain and sip the healthy senna tea by adding little honey.

Ajwain :

It is full of medicinal values and an old remedy for various health problems. The essential oils of ajwain have the antibacterial and antifungal properties making it effective for digestive problems. It stimulates the intestinal health by increasing the production of digestive juices.

What do you need to do?

Just roast a tsp. Ajwain seeds and grind them to a fine powder. With a warm glass of water, swallow the ajwain powder. It is one of the best home remedies for acidity and constipation.

Castor Oil :

One of the oldest remedies for constipation is Castor oil. The main advantage is that it helps in easy evacuation of stool. Along with this, it maintains the health of the intestines and keeps them clean.

How to Use Castor Oil for Constipation?

You can take one tsp. castor oil every morning. Once the problem of constipation is relieved, stop taking this oil.

Svarjiksara :

Its common name is baking soda and is often used by people to get rid of the constipation problem. It acts as a natural laxative in a milder form and helps make the stools soft. This further ensures that passing out the stools don’t cause any pain.

The best way to clean the stomach with baking soda is to drink a mixture of it in water.

Haritaki :

Haritaki or kadukkai powder is a natural laxative and Relieves constipation. All you need to do is, break a Haritaki, remove seeds and sundry its peel. Then grind it to make a fine powder and store it in a bottle.

Boil water and add the required amount of Haritaki powder to it. When it comes to lukewarm temperature, drink it before going to bed.

 Nisoth :

This herbal root helps reduce gastric acid secretion and acidity. Being a natural laxative it stimulates emptying of bowels and also improves digestion.

How to Use Nisoth for Curing Constipation?

All you have to do is, take 50 gm. Nisoth powder, 10 gm. pepper and 25 gm. sugar. Grind them well to make a mixture. Have ¼ tsp. of this powder with honey for healthy digestion.
