9 Spices for a Healthy Stomach

AbhiyudyaApril 5, 2022September 19, 2023

Digestion plays a main role in our body’s good health and well-being. But it is seen that one out of every three people experiences some kind of digestive discomfort on a regular basis. It ranges from an unpleasant heavy feeling to bloating, heartburn, acidity, gas, and constipation. These problems are not at all pleasing. They can put a negative effect on the way we spend our day, what we do and how we feel about our body.

Digestion depends on many things besides the actual food. Like our lifestyle, habits, how we eat and of course working of the digestive organs. For a long and disease free life, it’s important to keep the digestive system healthy.

In Ayurveda, spices are considered the best medicines. Each spice has the power to add flavors to your dishes and improve your digestion. The digestive fire which we call the production of digestive enzymes in modern terms is stimulated by spices. Today’s article is all about the Ayurvedic spices which have the powers to boost your digestive health.

Let’s discuss them in detail!

Cumin :

The common name of this spice is Jeera. These seeds are used as a famous home remedy to get relief from stomach problems like gas and bloating.

Plus the anti-inflammatory properties of this lessens the stomach pain and discomfort.

Ginger :

This warm spice is loaded with excellent digestive properties, pain-relieving, and immunity-boosting power.

Ginger

You can take fresh ginger or a dried and grounded one. Try adding ginger to a curry dish or a stir-fry. Drinking ginger tea is a good option too.

Bay Leaves :

These tej patta leaves are a good digestive stimulant. To take up the benefits of these leaves you can add them to your recipes, like while cooking rice or any other grain.

Fenugreek Seeds :

These are well known as methi seeds and are a rich source of fiber and antioxidants. Fenugreek seeds help to improve the natural process of digestion.

They do so by flushing out the harmful toxins from the body. In addition to this, the lubricating properties of this spice help to soothe the intestines and stomach.

Cardamom :

Its strong aroma helps in activating the secretion of the enzymes which are effective for digestion. Taking it after having a heavy meal is a good choice.

It is useful for curing the stomach problems like poor digestion, gas and constipation. Certain compounds of elaichi (cardamom) help to increase the bowel movement.

Clove :

It is a sweet-smelling spice and holds a good amount of eugenol oil. This oil is famous for its antioxidant, antiseptic, anesthetic and astringent properties.

In Ayurveda, cloves have the ability to balance the Kapha Dosha. The carminative nature of it prevents the formation of gas in the digestive tract.

Cinnamon :

Cinnamon or Dalchini is helpful for improving the digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Taking a pinch of saunf seeds with salt and chewing them after a meal is a good thing. This is because it helps to improve the digestion and clear the strong smell of food from your mouth.

Coriander :

This spice contains a good amount of antioxidants which help to relax the muscles of our digestive system. This, in turn, reduces the discomfort which happens because of digestive problems. You can add a few coriander seeds to a boiling pot of rice to infuse the rice with extra flavour. Moreover, you can make chutney of the coriander plant.

These spices are great for removing toxins and preventing the signs of indigestion, gas, and constipation. It’s better to use fresh spices and avoid the old, stale or those without an airtight container. Along with these spices, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle like drinking the proper amount of water and eating fibre and water-rich foods.

Moreover to keep your stomach hale and hearty you can use an Ayurvedic medicine; Pet Saffa Natural Laxative Granules. It is an herbal formulation and helps to relieve stomach discomforts like constipation, gas, bloating and forms regular bowel movements.
