Foods You Must Not Eat When Constipated

Constipation is a common problem in which people find it difficult to have regular bowel movements. In medical terms, it is defined as less than three bowel movements in a week. Some symptoms of this health issue are gas, bloating or pain in passing the bowel movements.

According to experts, a healthy bowel movement should be smooth, soft and easy to pass. If you experience fewer than two per day, or if you find yourself straining, then you are constipated.

There are long lists of foods which help to get rid of constipation. On the other hand, there are certain foods which can have a binding effect and can make your constipation worse.

In today’s article, I’m going to share with you some foods which you must avoid eating when you’re constipated.

Let’s start!

Fried Foods :

These foods are a hub of high saturated fats and have a tendency to yield blockages. These greasy foods are hard for the body to digest and thus slows down the process of digestion.

This, in turn, leads to the problem of constipation. Hence, it’s better to avoid eating foods which are fried in oils or butter.

Dairy Products :

There are many people who complain that dairy products make them constipated. This may happen because their body is not capable of digesting lactose; the natural sugar of milk. This indigestion causes problems like abdominal gas and bloating.

Plus these dairy products don’t contain a good amount of dietary fiber. Therefore, taking them in excess amount can also cause constipation or make it worse. Avoid eating all types of cheese, ice cream, milk and sour cream when constipated. Taking unsweetened yogurts which are made by traditional methods will be a good option.

Prepackaged Foods :

Frozen dinners, ready meals, T.V dinners or microwave meals- whatever you call them, prepackaged foods are bad for your gut. This is because they are low in fiber and high in salt and fat.

The excess salts of them trap fluids from your cells. This means that your colon will not have access to the fluids.

Caffeine :

Caffeine is moisture less substance and causes dehydration in your body. It makes your kidneys flush out more water. Whenever you become a water deficit, it becomes difficult for the body to maintain the normal blood volume.

Moreover, your body starts absorbing the water it needs from the digesting food. It leaves you with hard stools which are difficult to pass.

Unripe Bananas :

While the ripe bananas help to relieve constipation, the unripe ones do the opposite. The under-ripe green bananas cause constipation because they have a lot of starch making them difficult to digest.

They contain fiber which draws water from the intestines. This, as a result, makes the stools dry and hard.

Tea :

Experts suggest avoiding tea consumption when constipated. Although, the herbal teas don’t have any negative effect whereas the black teas contain tannins, which bind the stool together. Tea is a caffeinated drink and a little bit of it can get the digestive system moving. But, its excess intake can dehydrate the body and give the opposite results.

Chocolate :

This may be disheartening for the chocolate lovers. Dark chocolates may have multiple health benefits but it’s better to avoid it when seeking relief from constipation.

Milk chocolates are rich in sugar and fat, and the complications which come with those. Chocolate contains caffeine which can worsen the issue of constipation.

Red Meat :

Red meat can make a person constipated and worsen the situation for the ones suffering from constipation. This is because it is high in fat and its digestion takes a long time. The tough protein fibers of it are difficult to digest for the stomach. It’s better to limit the intake of red meat to avoid constipation.

So, if you are struggling with constipation, making some simple changes in your diet will help you. Try to avoid or reduce the intake of constipating foods, including the ones listed above. Along with this, make sure to drink plenty of water and eat fiber-rich foods.
