People always have been aware that bowel movements are important for good health. But in today’s fast-paced society, a poor diet, stress or frequent traveling can come in the way of you and good digestion. Due to this, regular pooping becomes tough and one faces the problem of constipation.
This health issue causes fewer than three bowel movements per week and hardens the stools which are difficult to pass. Flax seeds :
The mucilage in Flax seeds or Linseeds shows laxative activity. Plus, they are high in fiber and promote a healthy digestive system. They help in smooth passage of food through the intestines to keep you regular.
To a glass of water, mix 1-2 tsp. flaxseeds powder and drink it. Or you can add it to breakfast cereal or plain yogurt. Try it two times, once before going to bed and once during the day.
Psyllium Husk :
We get this husk from the seeds of Plantago ovata plant. The insoluble fibers aid the stools to soak water from the intestines to comfort the bowel movements. So, mix ½ tsp. Psyllium husk in a glass of warm water or milk. Have this drink before going to bed.
Aloe Vera :
Aloe vera gel has powerful laxative properties which help in digestion and mends bowel movements. This gel has more than 75 nutrients including minerals, vitamins, amino acids and water etc. that helps to heal constipation.
To a cup of water or fruit juice, add 2 tsp. aloe vera gel and blend it in a blender. Take this drink on an empty stomach every morning.
This fruit has good laxative properties because of an enzyme papain which helps to digest proteins in the large intestine. In addition, it has high water and insoluble fiber content having nutrients like vitamin A, C and E. So, eat half a papaya fruit in the morning or have papaya smoothie on regular basis.
They are dry plums or munakka and work as an excellent natural laxative. The regular intake of prunes can ensure complete, spontaneous bowel movements per week with a better consistency of stools.
You can eat 6 or 7 prunes a day. Or another option is to drink ½ to 1 cup of prune juice on empty stomach in the morning.
Both fresh and dry figs have properties of a laxative and helpful in getting relief from constipation. Eat 2 or 3 fresh figs with their skin, as most of the fibers are present in the skin. In case you want to eat dry figs, it’s better to soak them in water for several hours before eating.
Leafy Green Vegetables :
The leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, alfalfa, and lettuce etc. work as a natural laxative. .
These are high in dietary fibers, calcium and vitamins A, C and K etc. All these important nutrients are helpful for the process of digestion and overall health. Thus, fill up your refrigerator with green leafy veggies to keep your tummy healthy.
Legumes like peas, beans, chickpeas, pulses, soya beans, peanuts etc. are good laxative foods. They are high in fiber and low in both fat and cholesterol. It helps to ease up digestion and bowel movement.
Both Apple fruit and juice act as natural laxatives and help to get relief from constipation. You don’t have to sit for long in the bathroom every morning.
The digestive fibers help to soften the stools. It stimulates the bowel movement by adding bulk to your stools. Eating 1 to 2 apples in routine can bring the digestive system on track. Make sure to have this fruit with a skin or you can drink fresh apple juice.
So, these are some of the foods which can work as natural laxatives for relieving constipation. Along with them, maintain a healthy lifestyle like drink plenty of water and regular exercise, etc. Don’t hold back the bowel movement for too long as it can lead to constipation.
