Constipation Causes and Treatment

Constipation is defined as having a bowel movement less than a three times per week. During Constipation stools are generally hard, small in size and dry. Some people who are constipated find it painful to have a bowel movement and often experience bloating, straining, and the sensation of a full bowel movement.
Most of the people think they are constipated if they are not getting proper bowel movement in a day. However, normal stool elimination can take three days or it can happen three times a day depending on person’s metabolism.

Constipation is a Symptom not a Disease

In throughout life, almost each and every person experience constipation at different stage of life. Most of the time Constipation is temporary and not cause any serious effect to body.

Cause of Constipation:
• Not Enough Fiber in the Diet
• Lack of Physical Activity (Especially in the Elderly)
• Excess Medications
• Dietary Products such as Milk
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome
• Changes in life or routine such as Pregnancy, Aging and Travel
• Abuse of Laxatives
• Ignoring the urge to have a Bowel Movement
• Dehydration
• Specific Diseases or Conditions, such as Stroke (most common)
• Problems with the Colon and Rectum
• Problems with Intestinal Function (Chronic Idiopathic Constipation)

Ayurvedic Treatment of Constipation

Drink at least 80 ounces of water or herbal tea per day. It helps to balance vata’s cold quality. It’s also important to drink the majority of these fluids away from meals – at least 20 minutes before, or 1 hour after eating.
