An Ayurvedic Approach to Constipation Relief

Healthy elimination involves absorbing water and glucose, stool formation, elimination of solid waste and clearance of heavy metals & toxins from body.


The perception about constipation varies from person to person as for some one day without a bowel is a symptom of constipation and for some a bowel movement every other is normal. Therefore, experience of each individual varies and is more important than predefined health theory of “one size fit all”. In Nutshell, it is a feeling of complete evacuation which may happen in one or two bowel movements per day.

What is Constipation?

  • Unable to have a bowel movement
  • Feeling of Incomplete bowel movement
  • Straining during bowel movement
  • Feeling of being blocked
  • Hard, dry or pellet like stools


The Ayurvedic Approach

As per Ayurvedic perspective, constipation is due to cold and dry qualities of ‘Vata’ which disturb and inhibit the proper functioning of colon. Following are the Strategies which counter vata’s dry and cold qualities and help in attaining healthy bowel movements.

Drink at least 2 liter of warm water per day. It helps to balance Vata’s cold quality. You must drink water away from meals- at least 20 minutes before or one hour after eating. Daily routine of consuming herbal tea also help to relieve from constipation

Fruits are fibrous, hydrating and helps to pacify Vata. Prefer peaches, peeled apples, soaked raisins, ripe bananas, and soaked prunes. Chew fruits properly and prefer eating fruits at least one hour before or after other foods.



  • drink-fruits-juicesDrink Fruits juices: Prune juices or Pineapple juices are most beneficial and you can also dilute it with water.

  • take-soaked-flax-seeds-or-milk-with-gheeTake Soaked Flax Seeds or Milk with ghee: Boil 1 Tablespoon of Flax Seeds in a cup of warm water for 2-3 minutes, cool and drink it.
